"The Black Cat" is a beautiful painting by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, portraying his own cat black cat Bobby. The graphic, agitated lines and highly-keyed color palette are timeless and distinct to the artist. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art.   Kirchner believed that powerful forces - enlivening yet also destructive - dwelt beneath the veneer of Western civilization, and he believed that creativity offered a means of harnessing them.
