"Franzi In Front Of A Carved Chair", one of the most popular paitings by the Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who was among the founders of the artists group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", is one of the finest examples of the Expressionist style of the German group Die Brücke, characterised by the simplification of form and the arbitrary use of colour. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. Kirchner believed that powerful forces - enlivening yet also destructive - dwelt beneath the veneer of Western civilization, and he believed that creativity offered a means of harnessing them.
