"Gerda" is a half-length portrait of the dancer Gerda Schilling, by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, painted after Kirchner had moved to Berlin. The stylized pose and angularity of the figure set within a radically foreshortened background are typical of the artist’s mature style.

The rough-hewn features of her face also call to mind Kirchner’s interest in African masks. The intensity of the composition, the combined result of a harsh palette and sketchlike drawing, is made more dynamic by the highly abstract space surrounding the figure.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the group Die Brücke or "The Bridge", a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. Kirchner believed that powerful forces - enlivening yet also destructive - dwelt beneath the veneer of Western civilization, and he believed that creativity offered a means of harnessing them.
