EARLY WORKS
S H Raza's early work, predating his iconic Bindu series, focused heavily on vibrant, expressionist landscapes and townscapes. A co-founder of the Progressive Artists' Group (PAG), Raza initially captured the energy of rural India and later the architecture of France after moving to Paris in 1950. These crucial paintings employed fluent watercolors and gestural oil-on-canvas techniques, often with a heavy impasto influenced by Post-Impressionists like Cézanne. This pre-abstraction phase established his bold use of colour and foundational engagement with nature, a theme that defined his career.
The Bombay themed paintings were primarily cityscapes and street scenes of the bustling metropolis, a departure from the rural landscapes of his earlier youth. He frequently painted specific landmarks and districts and views from his workplace window.
