"Krishna and Balaram" is a popular painting by the Indian Modernist Jamini Roy shows Lord Krishna and his brother Balaram dancing in Vrindavan along with beautiful peacocks. Balarama and Krishna spent their childhood as a cow herder, playing for fun and enjoyment and not for sport or gain.

Roy used bold, sweeping brushstrokes while painting and restricted his palette to seven vibrant and earthy colours – Indian red, yellow ochre, cadmium green, vermillion, grey, blue and white. Roy's rejection of the then modern style of painting and his foray into the realm of Bengali folk paintings marked a new beginning in the history of Indian modern art.

Jamini Roy is an Indian painter, honored with the State award of Padma Bhushan. Roy's rejection of the then modern style of painting and his foray into the realm of Bengali folk paintings marked a new beginning in the history of Indian modern art.   Jamini Rai captured the qualities that are a part of the native folk painting and recombined them with those of his own. He fused the minimal brush strokes of the Kalighat style with elements of tribal art from Bengal.
