Maud Lewis

Maud Lewis (1903 – 1970) was a Canadian folk artist from Nova Scotia. Her paintings were inspired by childhood memories of the landscape and people and focused on subjects in nature and ordinary life.

Bright, pure colors are a hallmark of her paintings.

Lewis lived most of her life in poverty but remains one of Canada's best-known folk artists. Her biopic - Maudie - starred Oscar-nominated actors Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins.

About Yellow Truck Maud Lewis Canadian Folk Artist Painting
A painting bartered for a grilled cheese sandwich almost half a century ago has sold for enough money to buy a restaurant. "Black Truck" by renowned Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis sold at auction for $272,000, 10 times the assessed value and a record for a work by Lewis, whose work remained obscure until decades after her death in 1970   "Black Truck" by Maud Lewis, 1967. Originally from the private collection of John H. Kinnear. Lewis painted many different vehicles that were part of her life and were inspirations for these vehicular subjects. Black was her colour of choice. The truck, less often seen will no doubt fill a gap for collections focusing on this aspect. From the Estate of Irene and Tony Demas.   Former restaurant owner Irene Demas found that it was "surreal" to see the painting, which was in her son's childhood bedroom for many years, sell for such a high price after a bidding war. Letters between Lewis and John Kinnear, a fellow artist who supplied the restaurant with paintings in return for sandwiches, sold separately for $54,500.
