Thomas Daniell was an English landscape painter who also painted Orientalist themes. Thomas Daniel made his name with a series of prints and aquatints of views based on his travels in India in 1786–1794. Such ‘exotic’ Indian scenes became the stock-in-trade for Daniell for the rest of his career. View Artist Collection

About View Of Calcutta From Garden Reach Thomas Daniell Vintage Orientalist Paintings of India
Water-colour drawing of the view of Calcutta from Garden Reach after Thomas and William Daniell dated c.1810. This picture appears to be a copy of plate 49 from 'A Picturesque voyage to India by the way of China'. Inscribed on the front in pencil: 'Calcutta from the Garden Reach'; on the back in pencil: 'Calcutta. William Daniell R.A. Plate 49. 'View of Calcutta from the Garden Reach'.' When the Daniells arrived in Calcutta in 1786, the town was known as the 'City of Palaces'. Garden Reach, a suburb of Calcutta, was one of the most fashionable areas of the city where many Europeans built Palladian mansions with grounds sweeping down to the river's edge. Calcutta lies on the banks of the River Hooghly, a tributary of the Ganges.
