"Untitled (Woman Playing Sitar)" is among the valuable paintings by the great Indian master M F Husain which was sold at $146,500 USD in an auction in 2012. Universally acclaimed as one of India's greatest modern masters, Maqbool Fida Husain is unparalleled in his breadth of artistic vision and sophisticated re-contextualization of European Modernism.

His endless quest for the cultural roots and a fearlessly open-minded willingness to absorb diverse influences has made Husain one of the most recognisable figures of modern Indian art. The controversial artist known for narrative paintings, executed in a modified Cubist style, the modern master is regarded by some as the Picasso of India.

The controversial artist known for narrative paintings, executed in a modified Cubist style, the modern master is regarded by some as the Picasso of India.

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.    Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. Hussain's —sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.   M. F. Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.
