M F Husain Paintings

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.

Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.

Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.

About Untitled (Teresa)
"Untitled (Teresa)", a famous painting by M F Husain portrays one of his most favourite themes: Mother Teresa. Numerous canvases have been dedicated to the subject of Mother Teresa which stand as testimony to the profound impact the saint had on the artist’s life and work. He has often invoked Mother Teresa as a symbol of the ethical possibilities of compassion and selflessness. Variations in medium aside, a faceless woman, draped in a white sari with a dark blue border, often in the company of children, is a common refrain in the series. These paintings explore notions not only of the Mother Teresa herself, but of motherhood in general, from the biblical Virgin Mary to Husain’s own mother who died when he was very young. His handling of clothing also picks up on the 15th century Italian preoccupation with realism in the representation of drapery and the folds of ecclesiastical robes in this work.
