M F Husain Paintings

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.

Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.

Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.

About Untitled (Scientist)
"Untitled (Scientist)", a rare portrait by M F Husain, believed to be a portrait of Husain's late friend Dr. A. Rahman, an Indian biochemist from the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysore, is highly unusual for its subdued palette and semi-abstracted features, and captures a unique snapshot in the development of Husain as an artist. Husain's paintings [from 1962-1965] reveal an almost prophetic foreshadowing of his climactic emotional experiences. There is in them a clear mark of deepening spiritual unrest. The darker works are, however, at the center of his artistic experience during this period; in expressions of cosmic anxiety they represent most closely his exploration of the nature of being.
