"Untitled (Head) , 1962" is a well-known painting by the famous Indian master Tyeb Mehta. His treatment is stark: lumpen, Bacon-esque figures—hybrids, deformed and dismembered, their arms flailing—the jagged diagonal lines of their bodies cutting across flat color planes, heightening their impact. Mr. Mehta’s style of painting sets him apart from India’s revered group of Modernist painters. His paintings stand out for his use of colors, in clear-cut segments, which create deconstructed, and sometimes disturbing, figurative representations of bulls and gods.
