M F Husain Paintings

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.

Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.

Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.

About Untitled (Ganesha)
"Untitled (Ganesha)" is a well-known painting by the famous Indian artist M F Husain. Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka and Binayak, one of the best-known and most worshiped deities in the Hindu pantheon, is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He frequently drew inspiration from epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and characterised gods and goddesses in modernist style. Hussain’s endless quest for his cultural roots and a fearlessly open-minded willingness to absorb diverse influences has made Husain one of the most recognisable figures of modern Indian art. His art involved an altered Cubist style, and incorporated primordial avenues of Indian mythology and culture.
