L. S. Lowry developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".
Lowry painted mysterious un-populated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished "marionette" works, which were only found after his death.

A flight of steps ascends the hill on the right. Lowry liked painting steps, as can be seen from the fortified uphill zigzag in Town Steps (1954). He was a superb designer of paintings, making shapes which are unusual but which complement each other and then lock together to form a unified whole. The crisp outlines here of walls and railings are very satisfying, but gentled and humanised by the inclusion of children and dogs.About the Art Prints
