"The Two Horses", one of the famous horse paintings by M F Husain, with his characteristic depiction, tremendous lines and the majestic way that the horses hold their heads high, creates a three-dimensional effect by his mosaic like application of paint. Hussain's horse paintings are among his most expensive works and are highly sought-after by collectors.

It is perhaps the artist's iconic horses that most effectively illuminate the amalgamation of personal and public, historic and contemporary, national and international that his body of work will always represent. These unbridled creatures recall mythical horses like Ashwamedh and those of the battle of Karbala, but also incorporate and mirror other influences on the artist's body of work.

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.    Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.   Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.
