About The Treachery of Images
“The Treachery of Images” is the most famous painting by the surrealist Rene Magritte that shows a pipe. Below it, Magritte painted, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" French for "This is not a pipe" thereby the viewer is presented with an irreconcilable contradiction that ultimately renders language useless. Because it clearly is a pipe, though not actually a pipe, but a representation on paper. The painting “This is not a pipe” (1935) questions the viewer’s perception. Magrite produced multiple versions of this image. The naturalistic painting means the pipe depicted is deceptively similar to the object itself, with the pipe’s shadow creating the impression of three-dimensionality.
