Norman Rockwell Paintings

A young talent, Norman Rockwell received his first commission at age 17.  By 1916, a 22-year-old Rockwell had painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post—the beginning of a 47-year and 321-cover relationship with the most prestigious magazine of the era.

Rockwell's success stemmed to a large degree from his careful appreciation for everyday American scenes, the warmth of small-town life in particular. Often what he depicted was treated with a certain simple charm and sense of humour. He created World War II posters and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

About The Runaway
"The Runaway" is arguably the artist’s most iconic image by America's preeminent illustrator, Norman Rockwell. This iconic image depicts a plucky young runaway in the midst of his adventure and recalls the innocence of a bygone era. Having packed up all of his worldly possessions in his neatly bundled knapsack, the boy has set out on his quest, stopping at a diner for some sustenance. A police officer sits next to him and smiles warmly at the boy, earnestly asking him to reconsider his departure. In the painting, Rockwell portrayed an idyllic version of small-town America. The original painting and study of The Runaway can currently be seen in the Norman Rockwell Museum traveling exhibition, Norman Rockwell: Beyond the Easel.
