M F Husain Paintings

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.

Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.

Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.

About The Puppet Dancers
"The Puppet Dancers" is one of the most famous painting by M F Husain reflecting the artist's fascination with toys, a theme that he developed with his love for folk art and the tropes of rural culture following his visits to Rajasthan. This painting depicts a woman, horse like figure, a dancer and one warrior, set against a dark background. This painting appeared in the Sotheby’s auction and was sold for more than INR 1.5 crore. In Husain's Puppet Dancers we not only see a culmination of his fascination with toys but also the development of a distinctive set of characters that were to follow him throughout his career. The line-up of puppets contain his faceless woman, the equine figure, the tribhanga nude and the mustachioed warrior, all of which reappear in subsequent canvases.
