This is one of pictures that Chagall painted while on a home visit to Belarus from Paris. When he came in 1914 war broke out and couldn't return. In 1917, he was living back in Vitebsk. It was also the year he became engaged to Bella - flying in the air celebrates the joy and ectasy of their love. Promenade is one of three pictures showing this: The Birthday - Bella is lifted into the air; in Over the Town, they have left earth altogether in The Promenade she is clearly flying like a kite; he stands on the ground, holding her hand as she is pulled up into the air and tugged powerfully away from him by the wind. Her torso acts as the kite-sail, her legs playing freely in the air like a kite-tail dancing in the breeze.

Marc Zakharovich Chagall (6 July 1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Russian-French artist.

Chagall was considered as pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters who invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the twentieth century. For decades, he had been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist.

"When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".
