Suzuki Harunobu

Suzuki Harunobu (1724 - 1770) was a Japanese designer of woodblock print art in the ukiyo-e style.

He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color (nishiki-e) prints in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

About The Poetess Ono no Komachi Suzuki Harunobu Japanese Ukiyo Woodblock Painting
Ono no Komachi  was a Japanese poet of the Heian period , one of six immortal Japanese poets and the only woman among them. Very little credible information about her life has been preserved, but numerous legends speak of her beauty, love affairs and poetic talent.  According to tradition, she was born in Akita Prefecture and lived as a court lady at the imperial court in Heian-kyo (now Kyoto). One hundred and ten tank poems have been preserved from her work , which are characterized by elegance, subtlety, sound painting and the depth of love feelings. Ki no Curajuki , the main organizer of the first imperial anthology of Japanese poetry , Kokinshu , ranked her among the six immortal Japanese poets (rokkasen). He then included eighteen of her five verses in the collection.
