Rene Magritte Paintings

The most celebrated Belgian artist of the twentieth century, Rene Magritte has achieved great popular acclaim for his idiosyncratic approach to Surrealism. His imagery has influenced pop, minimalist and conceptual art.

The illustrative quality of Magritte's pictures often results in a powerful paradox: images that are witty and beautiful in their clarity and simplicity, but which also provoke unsettling thoughts. They seem to declare that they hide no mystery, and yet they are also marvellously strange.

About The Philosopher's Lamp (La Lampe philosophique)
“The Philosopher's Lamp (La Lampe philosophique)” is one of the popular paintings by the surrealist Rene Magritte which is an ironic representation of the knowledge (the candle coil) and the philosophical thought focused on itself (a nose/head that smokes itself). Alan Hull's 1972 album Pipedream used “The Philosopher's Lamp” as the front cover. It is a grotesque self-portrait in which Magrite's nose is distended like an elephant's trunk and flops down into the bowl of the pipe he is smoking, as if to suggest the depths of his own addiction. He looks at us sidelong, sadly, well aware how pathetic and impotent he looks. A worm-like candle burns limply on a console table before him.
