About The Lovers II

”The Lovers II (1928)”, is an exceptional painting by Rene Magritte depicting two individuals locked in an embrace. Both figures have a whitish veil completely covering their faces and necks. The concealment stimulates the imagination and opens up a broad spectrum of interpretations ranging from love to grief, loss and death. With this image Magrite is perhaps addressing a traumatic experience from his childhood – the sight of his mother who was found in the River Sambre after her suicide. Her face was concealed by her nightdress, which had been pulled over her head.
