The Great Temple at Abu Simbel, commissioned by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE, is located in southern Egypt near the border with Sudan. Carved directly into the sandstone cliffs on the west bank of the Nile River, the temple complex is dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as to Ramesses II himself.
