The painting is on very fine hand-made paper, from the selected views of japan from the prominent designs of shin-hanga movement. His painting is of the Great Buddha of Kamakura which is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple and some recent creations. His woodblock paintings brought a life-like presence to the viewers and was recognised for his love for natural beauty. This painting was made in the year 1930.

Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the most prolific of all shin hanga ("new prints") printmakers and is regarded by many as one of the most talented Japanese landscape artist of the 20th Century. Kawase’s landscapes are markedly modern, yet they yearn for a Japan past and rest upon traditional virtues of delicacy, poise and restraint.

 

Hasui loved to travel and would often paint watercolors of Japan's most beautiful places..  In 1952, the Japanese government officially recognized Kawase Hasui as a Living National Treasure.
