“The Dessert: Harmony in Red (The Red Room)” painted by Henri Matisse in 1908 is seen by many art historians as Matisse’s masterpiece. Popular in Russia by the name “The Red Room”, depicts a maid arranging fruit on a table in a room dominated by its vibrant red wallpaper. It is in the permanent collection of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. In spite of the flatness of the red colour the artist managed to create within it the impression of space, space within which the female figure bending over the vase could move and within which the sharp angled view of the chair seemed natural. The window, through which we see a green garden with flowering plants, allows the eye to move into the depths of the canvas.About the Art Prints
