Degas wanted his depictions of bathtub and toilette scenes to seem completely real, as though you were looking through a keyhole. ''I show them stripped of their coquetry, in the state of animals cleansing themselves,'' he once remarked dryly. It is a description readily applicable to ''The Bath,'' circa 1895, and also perhaps to ''Woman Drying Her Hair,'' circa 1896-99, an unusually large charcoal-and-pastel drawing of a naked woman rubbing her neck. These pictures would have been deeply offensive a century ago because the subjects are women of availability; decent ladies bathed in a slip.

Edgar Degas  (1834 - 1917) was a French artist born in the city of Paris. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist.Degar is famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers.
