Edward Hopper is widely acknowledged as the most important realist painter of twentieth-century America. Hopper derived his subject matter from two primary sources: one, the common features of American life (gas stations, motels, restaurants, theatres, railroads, and street scenes) and its inhabitants; and two, seascapes and rural landscapes.

About Room in New York
“Room in New York” is one of the best works of Edward Hopper that illustrates one of his favourite themes: loneliness. The painting depicts an American night scene; a man reads a paper at a round table, a woman turns away in her own absorption and boredom, touching the piano keyboard with one finger. They are out of sync and only thing that seems to link the two persons to each other is a coffee table standing between them that they both touch. Indeed, there is no communication between them, each of them seeming to be in their own loneliness. About the Art Prints
