About Putti: A Ceiling Decoration
The composition of this canvas is possibly derived from Rubens' cycle of tapestries on the subject of the Eucharist (c.1626), created for the monastery of the Escalzas Reales, Madrid. The tapestry, with a similar miriad of angels, was designed to hang on a wall, but here the angels are seen as if from below thus imitate the perspective of a ceiling piece. Possibly related to Rubens' cycle of tapestries on the subject of the Eucharist (c.1626), created for the monastery of the Escalzas Reales, Madrid (but now helh in various locations), where a tapestry with a similar flock of angels is hung on a wall, but imitating the perspective "di sotto in su" of a ceiling piece.
