About Pollice Verso
“Pollice Verso”, currently located in the Phoenix Art Museum, is one of the most famous and debated art work by Jean Leon Gerome that represents the eponymous Roman gesture directed to the winning gladiators, in a detailed and brilliantly finished spectacle of a gladiator fight scene. The phrase pollice verso is ambiguous; it’s Latin for “with a turned thumb”, thereby creating a debate about what the gesture indicates. This exact painting inspired director Ridley Scott to make the Academy Award Winner film Gladiator, which includes a scene where the emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) makes the “Pollice Verso” gesture.
