Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He was influenced by Sessh? T?y? and other styles of Chinese painting. Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the internationally iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.Colour woodblock oban print. This poem by the early tenth century poet Kiyohara no Fukayabu, originally appearing in the "Summer" section of the Kokin waka sh?, laments the fleeting moon and is paired with Hokusai's imagined scene of a night's outing on a pleasure boat to escape the heat: A summer's night in twilight still barely begun the moon must be somewhere awake, too, in amongst the clouds.
