Created during his most influential year, Number 32, 1949 is a masterclass in Pollock’s "drip" technique. The work stands out for its sophisticated use of aluminum enamel, which provides a shimmering, metallic depth that interacts dynamically with the matte black and white layers. The painting possesses a concentrated energy that exemplifies the "all-over" composition style. By 1949, Pollock had reached a peak of rhythmic control, moving his entire body to weave a dense, intricate web of paint. Its historical weight is immense; it was produced during the height of his fame, and its $34 million sale in 2018 (originally sold for $300 in 1949) reflects its status as a rare survivor of his "classic period."

Jackson Pollock was the famous artist of the 20th century who revolutionized the world of modern art with his unique abstract painting techniques. Pollock was famous for his traditional techniques to explore abstraction expressionism via his splatter and action pieces, which involved pouring paint and other media directly onto canvases.  Pollock was both renowned and critiqued for his conventions. He died after driving drunk and crashing into a tree in New York in 1956, at age 44.
