Charles Joseph Minard Collection
Charles Minard was not a designer by trade, or at least not the kind of artsy mind we usually associate with creative genius. He was a civil engineer. He spent his career teaching at France’s premiere engineering school. He worked as the Inspector General of Bridges and Roads. It wasn’t until he retired at age 70 that he really began the work he would become best known for: infographics. View Artist Collection

About Napolean’s March Of 1812
"Napoleon’s March Of 1812" by Charles Joseph Minard is the most famous cartographic painting.  This map by Charles Joseph Minard portrays the losses suffered by Napoleon's army in the Russian campaign of 1812.   The path of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in the bitterly cold winter is depicted by the dark lower band, which illustrates the size of his army at specific geographic points during their advance and retreat. It displays six types of data in two dimensions: the number of Napoleon's troops; the distance traveled; temperature; latitude and longitude; the direction of travel and location relative to specific dates.   The graphic is notable for its representation in two dimensions of six types of data.
