Salvador Dalí Paintings

The Spanish painter Salvador Dali remains one of the most controversial and paradoxical artists of the twentieth century. Over last few decades, Salvador Dali has gradually come to be seen, alongside the likes of Picasso and Matisse, as a prodigious figure whose life and work occupies a central and unique position in the history of modern art.

Dali has also come to be regarded not only as its most well-known exponent but also, to many people, as an individual artist synonymous with Surrealism itself. In addition, Dali was a great artist who was a great self-publicist and showman. The combination was an irresistible formula for success.

About Myself at the Age of Ten When I was the Grasshopper Child Salvador Dali Surrealist Painting
This little panel, once owned by American Surrealist Joseph Cornell (1903-1973), is a superb example of Dalí’s pure creative automatism by the paranoiac-critical method. Automatism was a technique of painting, or drawing impetuously so that one’s inner and secret sensibility would be expressed before it could be adjusted or edited by the rational mind. These images are pre-rational, and defy logical resolution. These dream images address several Dalínian concerns, including childhood fears, anamorphous, and rhino horns. The boy in the sailor suit with the anamorphic head is Dalí, a perverse amalgamation of his childhood fear of grasshoppers and his preoccupation with cephalic deformation.Dalí’s own self-portrait in "Grasshopper Child" suggests Dalí’s identification with the Dutch Masters.
