About Melancholy I
“Melancholy I”, painted in the year 1892, is one of the jealousy inspired symbolic composition which Edvard Munch painted in several versions under various titles: Jealousy, and Melancholy. The inspiration for the painting was an unhappy romantic affair that Munch's friend, Jappe Nilssen, was involved in. This is now displayed in the National Gallery, Oslo. Munch painted multiple variant versions of the expressionist work in oil on canvas during the period 1891–96. The painting depicts a man with his head resting in his hand in a pensive mood at the edge of a shoreline.About the Art Prints
