Andy Warhol’s Mao Tse Tung (1972) was a silk-screen portrait of the Chinese leader and is one of the series that he made on the subject of fame. Andy Warhol based his 10 screen-prints on the official portrait of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong, that was illustrated on the cover of the widely circulated 1966 publication Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong, also known as the Little Red Book.

The ten brightly colored, monumental portraits create a glammed up iconic image of Mao, which translate this powerful, mysterious and somewhat intimidating image of Communist propaganda into a glamorized 1970s ready-made pop icon.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a key figure in Pop Art, an art movement that emerged in America and elsewhere in the 1950s to become prominent over the next two decades. From haunting black and white self-portraits to Polaroid snapshots of celebrities, many of the photos in the collection later became the inspiration for Warhol's most well-known Pop Art pieces.
