Georges Braque Paintings

Georges Braque was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism.

Georges Braque was at the forefront of the revolutionary art movement of Cubism. Braque's work throughout his life focused on still lifes and means of viewing objects from various perspectives through color, line, and texture. While his collaboration with Pablo Picasso and their Cubist works are best known, Braque had a long painting career that continued beyond Cubism.

About Mandolin And Fruit Dish
"Mandolin And Fruit Dish" by Georges Braque is one of the first Cubist works by Braque to feature a musical instrument. His inclusion of food and drink recalls the tradition of allegorical still lifes that represent the five senses. Braque’s tabletop display includes a glass with two straws, a mandolin, a compote with two pears, a lemon, and an open book or, more likely, pages of sheet music with staves (lines) for musical notation. The center of the composition is luminous and pale, possibly to indicate a ray of bright light washing over the studio ensemble.
