"Man With A Bird" is a well-known painting by the Indian master Jamini Roy portraying a Santhal man with a bird. He inflected his subjects with a unique modernist style. Roy reinterpreted South Asian iconography and subject matter with modern, graphic lines. Given the air of solemnity in his paintings, the touches of irony, playfulness and whimsy come as a pleasing surprise. Roy used bold, sweeping brushstrokes while painting and restricted his palette to seven vibrant and earthy colours – Indian red, yellow ochre, cadmium green, vermillion, grey, blue and white.
