About Madonna with Saints John the Baptist and Giovanni evangelista
"Madonna with Saints John the Baptist and Giovanni evangelista", also known as "Madonna Bardi" is a famous painting by the well-known Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli depicting Mary with the Christ Child in her arms in a raised marble throne. The setting is a festive garden with niches of vegetation over a marble base, framing the sacred group and the two saints standing on their sides: John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The saints stand on their feet a marble step spatially advanced with respect to the throne, where there is also a painting depicting the Crucifixion resting on an urn. Numerous symbolic meanings are shown, starting with the hortus conclusus, symbol of Mary's virginity; white lilies, a marian purity attribute; the myrtle, characterizing Mary as a new Venus, the mystic vessel at the feet of the throne, or the white and red flowers, respectively, of the absence of sin and of the blood that prefigures the Passion of Christ , to which alludes also the palmtree of martyrdom. The olive and laurel refer to the mystery of the Incarnation.
