Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and print-maker who played a great role in late 19th-century Symbolism and German expressionism in the 20th century, with his intensely evocative treatment of psychological themes displaying strong mental anguish in many of the pieces that he created.
The paintings he made focused on the internal view of the objects, as opposed to the exterior, and what the eye could see. Symbolism painters believed that art should reflect an emotion or idea rather than represent the natural world in the objective. His drawings, paintings, and prints bear the power to express, and perhaps alleviate, any viewer's own emotional or psychological condition.
