Landscape (Sansui)—frequently associated with his famous late 15th-century works such as Splashed-Ink Landscape (Haboku Sansui, 1495) or his iconic seasonal landscape hanging scrolls—is a defining masterpiece by the Zen monk-painter Sesshū Tōyō (1420–1506). Sesshū is widely revered as Japan’s greatest master of monochrome ink wash painting (suibokuga), credited with establishing a distinctively Japanese style of landscape art separate from his Song and Ming dynasty Chinese models.
