Dante Gabriel Rossetti Paintings

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet, illustrator, painter, translator and founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His work influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rosetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.

Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work, especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal (who was also his wife), Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.

About La Donna Della Finestra (The Lady of Pity)
"La Donna Della Finestra (The Lady of Pity)" is a famous composition by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the subject of which is derived from Dante's autobiographical Vita Nuova, where the figure of the Woman at the Window appears when Dante is sunk deep in grief for the death of Beatrice. The sitter for this work was Jane Morris, with whom Rosetti fell in love in about 1868. It is significant that he chose to represent her as 'La Donna Della Finestra', suggesting that he felt she brought him consolation for the death of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal, whom he regarded as his Beatrice. This is an unfinished painting, though earlier, completed versions exist. The rich, gold hues of the work contrast with the other versions.
