Leonardo da Vinci Paintings

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian man who lived in the time of the Renaissance. He was good at lots of things, but was most famous as a painter. He also was a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician, and a writer.

Leonardo was curious about everything in nature. He wanted to know how everything worked. He was very good at studying, designing and making all sorts of interesting things. He was trained to be an artist by the sculptor and painter Verrocchio.

Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the "Universal Genius" or "Renaissance Man", an individual of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination".

About La Belle Ferronniere
"La Belle Ferronniere" also known as Portrait of an Unknown Woman by the famous Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, is identified to be the portrait of the wife or daughter of an ironmonger (a ferronnier). The subject was said to be discreetly alluding to a reputed mistress of Francis I of France, married to a certain Le Ferron. The tale is a romantic legend of revenge in which the aggrieved husband intentionally infects himself with syphilis, which he passes to the king through infecting his wife. Although the sitter of the painting "La Belle Ferronniere" is still shrouded in mystery, the landmark exhibition "Leonardo Da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan" listed the portrait as possibly depicting Beatrice d'Este, wife of Ludovico Sforza. This challenges the portrait's earlier attribution to Lucrezia Crivelli, a mistress of Ludovico.
