About Horses In A Pasture Yoshida Hiroshi Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print Art Painting
Numazaki Pasture is a woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida. Yoshida was an avid traveler and often traveled to different areas of Japan to capture mundane scenes of people in the city. Yoshida took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese traditional ink painting themes to depict scenes. He also specialized in creating the impression of being “on the spot” and immerses the viewer into the scene itself. This print depicts a group of horses grazing in the Numazuki pasture. The different colored horses crowd around the hills and feed on the grass. Behind them, there is a lake and another patch of land. The bright sky above them illuminates the area and the beauty of the landscape. This print emphasizes the interactions between animals, land, and the beauty of the landscape of Japan. This print’s perspective immerses the viewer in the scene and creates the impression that they are in the pasture watching the horses.
