About Hanuman Chalisa Ramayan Phad Painting
The Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn in praise of Hanuman, and popularly recited by millions of Hindus every day. It is an Awadhi language text attributed to Tulsidas, and is his best known text apart from the Ramcharitmanas. The word Chalisa is derived from 'Chalis' meaning the number 'forty' in Hindi, denoting the number of verses (Chaupais) in the hymn. Lord Hanuman is a deity and a devotee of Lord Rama. He is one of the central characters of the Ramayana. According to the Shaiva tradition, he is also an incarnation of Shiva. The Hanuman Chalisa praises the power and other qualities of Hanuman including his strength, courage, wisdom, celibacy (brahmacharya), and devotion to Rama. Phad, originating in Bhilwara in Rajasthan, is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods. Created as travelling or mobile temples, these traditional paintings were carried by priest-singers who would unfold them after sunset and sing and perform stories of their local deities. This is perhaps why the paintings are called ‘Phad’, which means ‘fold’ in the local dialect.
