"Hajera" is a valuable monograph by the Indian master M F Husain, depicting two distinct women, illuminated in varying hues against monochromatic surroundings making them the focal point of this work. Husain paints them in reverence: the two women, one shielding her face with her ghunghat /veil, and the other sheltered by the woman in the foreground, appear to be guarding their modesty.

Husain creates a three-dimensional effect by his mosaic like application of paint. The colour palette in Hajera reveals the artist’s love for Indian miniatures. Hajera is part of a legacy of Husain’s most significant paintings of women executed in the 1950s and 1960s. This work is a profound example of Husain’s unique fusion of post-independence and Post-Impressionist painting: powerfully evocative of classic Indian plastic traditions and distinctly Modern at the same time.

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.    Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.   Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.
