M F Husain Paintings

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915 - 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). M F Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s.

Husain began his career by painting billboards for feature films. When he took up painting as an art form, he returned time and again to his roots, and to themes that blended folk, tribal and mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Ramayana, Mahabharata, British Raj, Bollywood, horses and motifs of Indian urban and rural life.

Husain’s name has become almost synonymous with modern Indian art, for no single artist has popularised Indian art. M F Husain was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial (Brazil) in 1971.

About Folk Lore Kerala IV
"Folk Lore Kerala - IV" is a charming painting by the Indian modern master M F Husain depicts a svelte woman amidst luxurious green vegetation, flanked on her right by a coconut tree. The present work, painted a year after Husain visited Kerala, contains all these elements that he had found so captivating; the dark-skinned nubile woman signifiying the matriarch and the tropical foliage and tranquil setting. He has used a mosaic like approach in his application of paint, with multiple patches of reddish brown earthy tones to emphasise the woman’s multi-faceted skin tone and vibrant greens for the verdant undergrowth.
