About Farm Women at Work
"Farm Women at Work" by Georges Seurat is a great example of his unique technique commonly known as Divisionism, or Pointillism, an approach associated with a softly flickering surface of small dots or strokes of color. He was largely inspired by the peasant imagery of Barbizon painter Jean-Francois Millet, and his crosshatched brushstrokes in these small works of agrarian life belie his incipient experiments with the division of color. While rural and urban social themes were an attendant aspect of his work Seurat also painted port scenes and seascapes along the northern coastline of France.
