Edvard Munch Paintings

Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944)  was a Norwegian painter who played a great role in late 19th-century Symbolism.

The paintings he made focused on the internal view of the objects, as he believed that art should reflect an emotion or idea rather than represent the natural world in the objective. Munch explored the themes of love, fear, death, melancholia and anxiety via his paintings.

About Despair
“Despair” is a great example of Edvard Munch’s excellent portrayal of psychological disturbance dominated by a strong emotional pitch. In the foreground is a well-dressed man with bowed head, facing a sombre, mountainous landscape. The red sky and the narrow bridge railing are familiar from the composition for Munch’s most famous painting, The Scream (1893). Munch often made several versions of his most significant motifs. This painting is another version of the “Sick Mood at Sunset (Despair)” painting.
