Edward Hopper is widely acknowledged as the most important realist painter of twentieth-century America. Hopper derived his subject matter from two primary sources: one, the common features of American life (gas stations, motels, restaurants, theatres, railroads, and street scenes) and its inhabitants; and two, seascapes and rural landscapes.
No one captured the isolation of the individual within the modern city like Edward Hopper. His imagery of figures within urban settings go well beyond their role as modern cityscapes, exposing the underbelly of the human experience. His work demonstrates that realism is not merely a literal or photographic copying of what we see, but an interpretive rendering.

The Barber Shop (1931) The Barber Shop was painted in 1931 an is an oil on canvas. Like much of Hopper's work it has a modernist feel, the central character removed, reflecting the isolation of the modern age. The barber is marginalised in the painting by the light and shade of the banister and the background shadow, which frames the woman as the central character. Somewhat like a photograph, the woman is not looking directly at us but is somehow preoccupied with her own thoughts. This serves to increase our sense of detachment from the woman and enhances her mystery to the onlooker. There is somehow some contradiction created within The Barber Shop, like much of Hopper's paintings. About the Art Prints
