Remedios Varo, original name in full María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga, Spanish-Mexican artist who played an integral role in the Mexico City-based Surrealist movement.   She is known for her enigmatic paintings of androgynous beings engaged in magic arts or the occult.her paintings are populated with strange humans engaged in mystical and alchemical activity in dreamlike atmospheres.   Her compositions also include architectural features that make direct reference to medieval art and show her expert draftsmanship. She was an admirer of Hiëronymus Bosch, whose mysterious compositions undoubtedly influenced her.
