In 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition, Claude Monet painted the Argenteuil Bridge. Here the foreground is filled with sailboats at their mooring. The effects of light on the masts and on the roofs of the houses on the bank in the background are an opportunity for the play of complementary colours (orange and blue) which accentuate the glittering light.

Claude Monet (1840 – 1926), the founder of Impressionism, was one of the most influential landscape painters in the history of art.

Born in Paris, eliminating black and gray from his palette, he represented natural color like a prism, breaking it down into its individual components

Monet brought the study of the transient effects of natural light to its most refined expression, ultimately becoming a forerunner of 20th century modernism.
